Mitochondria are the batteries of our cells. They have their own DNA which creates many of the tools needed for their function and as our skin ages, mitochondria become inefficient and show an increase in DNA damage. Eventually, this downward trend leads to skin ageing, featuring tired or fatigued skin as the performance of the batteries begins to decline. Skin Life Analytics non-invasive testing can detect damage before any visible signs of ageing are present and therefore are an important part of measuring anti-ageing interventions, tracking skin health and providing guaranteed treatment evidence that allows you to continue with a treatment plan or pivot to a new one.
The Science
Skin ageing is the result of a loss of cellular function and as the batteries of the cell, the mitochondria play a pivotal role in skin and its ageing process. Mitochondrial damage has been found to accumulate with age in skin cells, which can be further accelerated by external factors, such as sunlight and pollution.
Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are key features in ageing skin, and this is directly linked to the phenotypes of wrinkle formation, uneven pigmentation, and a reduction in elasticity.
